Owls Prepare for Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

BOCA RATON, FL – The Florida Atlantic University track and field team will travel to Houston, Texas this week to compete in the team’s first Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The championships, hosted by Rice, will take place over four days beginning on Thursday, May 15 at the Holloway Field and Ley Track.

On Thursday, runners will compete in the heptathlon and decathlon events. Friday’s schedule of events includes the heptathlon, decathlon, hammer and the 10,000 meter run. Saturday’s running events will feature the 1,500, the men’s 100 hurdles, the women’s 100 hurdles, the 100, 200, 400 and 800 meter dash, the 400 hurdles and the 3000 steeplechase. Saturday’s field events include the long jump, the discus, the men’s pole vault and the women’s high jump. Sunday’s concluding running events include the 4x100 relay, the 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1,500 meter dash, the 5,000 meter run, the men’s 110 hurdles, the women’s 100 hurdles, the 400 hurdles and the 4x400 relay. The concluding field events will include the triple jump, javelin, shot put, women’s pole vault and the men’s high jump.

FAU looks to make its mark in its first year competing in Conference USA with some of the team’s leading returners. Danielle Aromashodu has led the conference all season in the 400 meter hurdles. The senior’s current top-ranked finish is 58.82 which she set at the North Florida Invitational. Aromashodu, who serves as team captain, holds the FAU record in the 400 hurdles (58.33) and is a three-time Sun Belt Conference Champion in the event.  The Owls will also enter the championships equipped with distance runner Chloe Sell, competing in the 5,000 meter and the 10,000 meter runs. Sell led the Owls in the 5K at the 2013 Conference USA Cross Country Championships with a 13th-place finish. The sophomore crossed the finish line in 17:46.90, improving her collegiate-best time by nearly 23-seconds and sending her to regionals. Sell suffered from an injury and was unable to compete at the 2013 regional competition. During the outdoor season, Sell improved her 5K finish to 17:33.88 at the Florida Relays.



The team’s newcomers have continued to improve their finishes throughout the season being led by freshmen Regina Wilkerson, Sitia Martinez and Deja Jones. Wilkerson will compete in the 100 and 200 meter dash and the 4x100 meter relay. She is currently ranked 12th in the conference for the 100 meter (11.77) and 18th in the 200 (11.88). Martinez will compete in the 400 meter hurdles and the 4x100 meter relay. She is currently ranked 16th in the conference for the 100 meter (11.88), 12th in the 200 meter (23.97) and 11th in the 400 hurdles (1:01.79). Jones is scheduled to compete in the 100 meter and the 4x100 meter relay. She is ranked 14th in Conference USA for the 100 meter (11.84). All three freshmen are in the relay pool for the 4x400 meter relay.
