BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Florida Atlantic University Track and Field team concluded the 2014 indoor track season at the Birmingham Crossplex Arena in their first appearance at the 2014 Conference USA Track and Field Indoor Championships. To highlight the two-day event, the 4x400 meter team nearly broke a school record.
“The quality of the competition in C-USA is almost comparable to that of some of the biggest conferences in the country” said head coach Alex Smolka.
Jones also competed in the 60 meter dash finishing 11th in the preliminaries clocking in at 7.63. FAU’s Martinez came in 17th for the event with a final time in the preliminaries of 7.67. Martinez went on to compete in the 200 meter dash finishing 11th with a time of 24.73. Jones was FAU’s next finisher for the 200 meter crossing the finish line 18th with a time of 25.00.
Tanisha Coppin competed in the 400 meter dash recording a 10th-place finish in 56.67. Danielle Aromashodu finished the event 19th with a time of 57.13. Lauren Walton finished in 9.11 in the 60 meter hurdles. For the distance events, Chloe Sell competed in the 3000 meter finishing in 10:24.11 followed immediately after by teammate Tara Cripe clocking in at 10:25.71. Sell also competed in the 5000 meter finishing in 18:07.24.
“Very often, when you move into a bigger conference you have to go through a growing phase. We were baptized by fire this weekend, but we certainly will learn from our experiences and will be better for it in the future” said Smolka.
The C-USA indoor championships concludes the indoor season which saw numerous student-athletes tie school records and achieve many top-10 school performances. FAU’s team now looks towards their first outdoor meet, the Hurricane Invitational, on Friday, March 21 and Saturday, March 22 at the University of Miami.
