BIRMINGHAM, AL- The Florida Atlantic University track and field team competed at conference opponent Southern Miss University on Friday in the Cupid Invitational at the Birmingham Crossplex Arena. Sitia Martinez finished the meet with a new personal record in the 60 meter dash and tying with the school record in the 200 meter dash.
Martinez finished the 60 meter dash preliminaries in 7.72 then improved her finish in the finals crossing the finish line in 7.65 for fourth-place. The freshman now holds the second best time in school history for the event. Martinez went on to finish the 200 meter dash in 24.55 claiming eighth-place at the invitational and tying with the school record set in 2008. Martinez is now the second student-athlete on the team to tie a school record this season, the first being Deja Jones in the 60 meter dash. Regina Wilkerson also competed in the 200 meter recording a personal record of 25.70.
FAU’s Ashley Stewart competed in the high jump recording a finish of 1.50 meters, the eighth-best finish in school history. Stewart also holds the fourth-best finish set during the 2013 indoor season. Tara Cripe finished the 5000 meter run in second-place with a final time of 18:15.77, a new personal record. Teammate Kia Heller-Spencer came in fifth with a time of 19:09.43.
Mar’rhea Everheart also set a new personal record at the invitational in the long jump with a 5.37 meter finish. Everheart finished in 14th-place and moved up on FAU’s all-time records list with the Owls’ seventh-best finish ever for the event.
FAU will prepare for its first appearance at the 2014 Conference USA Track and Field Indoor Championships hosted by UAB in Birmingham. The two-day event will begin on Friday, Feb. 28
