WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Freshman Sitia Martinez recorded her first win in only her second indoor meet since joining Florida Atlantic University’s track and field team at the Hilton Garden Invitation over the weekend. The two-day event was held at the JDL Fast Track.
Martinez claimed victory against 64 runners in the 200 meter dash with a final time of 24.78#. Her finish placed her fifth in Conference USA for the event and marked the sixth-best time in school history. FAU’s Regina Wilkerson finished the event in fourth-place. Martinez was FAU’s top finisher in the 60 meter dash. She recorded a time of 7.72 in the preliminaries but improved her finish by a hundredth of a second in the semifinals for 11th-place and the second-best time in school history. Teammate Deja Jones finished the event 14th with a final time of 7.75 in the semi-finals, the fifth-best time in school history.
FAU had many other student-athletes break into the all-time top-10 at the meet. In the 5000 meter, Tara Cripe crossed the finish line in 18:16.17# for a sixth-place. Her finish set the sixth-best time in school history. Kia Heller-Spencer clocked in at 18:43.25# for 14th-place and the eighth-best time in school history. Whitney McKelton competed in the 60 meter hurdle recording a time of 9.43 in the preliminaries. She went on to improve her time to 9.13 in the semifinals. Lauren Walton also finished in 9.13 in the semifinals, tying with McKelton for the seventh-best time in school history.
Tanisha Coppin placed seventh in the 400 meter run with a final time of 56.98#, the fifth-best time in school history. Danielle Aromashodu followed in tenth-place. Coppin and Aromashodu competed with Martinez and Jones on FAU’s 4x400 meter relay ‘A’ team. The team finished fourth with a final time of 3:48.08#, the second-best time in school history.
The Owls will compete next at the two-day Akron Invitational on Friday, Jan. 7 and Saturday, Jan. 8 in Akron, Ohio.
