Oct. 18, 2010
Boca Raton, Fla. - Standout performances by women’s cross country runner Friederike Feil and men’s soccer player Martin Nesic highlight this week’s Florida Atlantic University athletic department’s Student-Athlete of the Week Award.
Feil, a senior from Germany, posted her second straight 5-kilometer race victory in last Friday’s Stetson Hatter Invitational with a school record time of 17:33. The meet featured 120 competitors from 14 schools such as the Miami, UCF and Florida Gulf Coast. She broke her own school record, set more than two years ago, by two seconds and Feil’s performance helped the Owls finish second in the event. The victory was her second consecutive event title, after winning the Walt Disney’s Wide World of Sports Classic on October 9 in Lake Buena Vista. That effort helped Feil garner Sun Belt Conference Women’s Runner of the Week honors.
Meanwhile, Nesic scored the lone goal in the Owls’ victory over Northern Illinois last Saturday at the FAU Soccer Stadium. It was the first goal of the season from the freshman midfielder from Hinckley, Ohio. He has three shots in six matches this fall. Nesic’s goal gave the team its first victory in Mid-American Conference action.
Eight sports will be action this week for Florida Atlantic. After enjoying a week off, the football team goes on the road to play Arkansas State in a Saturday game, starting at 1 p.m., that’s being televised as part of the Sun Belt Conference Network’s Game of the Week.
