Feb. 14, 2011
Boca Raton, Fla. - Helping their respective teams to an impressive victory and strong performances, men's tennis player Ervin Garibovic and runner Friederike Feil joined softball player Rose Gressley in being recognized as Florida Atlantic University's Student-Athletes of the Week by the athletic department.
The award marks the first such honor for Garibovic and Gressley, while Feil is now a three-time honoree.
Garibovic, a senior from Bradenton, Fla., played an instrumental role in the Owls' dramatic 4-3 come-from-behind victory over USF on Sunday in Tampa. His three-set triumph at No. 2 singles tied the match 3-3 - after the team was down 3-1 earlier. He won the deciding third set 6-3 after splitting the first two sets. The win evened Garibovic`s singles record to 3-3 for the spring season.
Feil, a senior from Tuebingen, Germany, set another personal best time with a top-six finish during last weekend's Boston University Valentine Invitational. The 3,000-meter race featured 103 runners from colleges throughout the northeast region. Her 9:27.70 time in the event is the top mark in the Sun Belt Conference and 30th in the nation during the indoor season.
Meanwhile, Gressley was a dual threat on the mound and at-bat during the softball team's season-opening weekend at the USA National Training facility tournament in Clermont, Fla. The senior from Virginia Beach, Va., hit .308 in the first four games with five runs batted in. Her three-run home run gave the Owls a 3-1 win over the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. The Virginia Beach, Va. Native pitched two complete games in the circle and did not allow an earned run, but came out on the losing end of both contests.
