Senior Friederike Feil set a school record in the 3,000-meter race at last weekend's New Balance Invitational in New York
Feb. 7, 2011
Boca Raton, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University men's basketball player Greg Gantt and women's track runner Friederike Feil have been honored for their recent accomplishments by being named this week's Student-Athlete of the Week.
Gantt helped the basketball team remain atop the Sun Belt Conference with dramatic victories over North Texas and FIU. The 6-foot-2 shooting guard scored a game-high 19 points and pulled down the key defensive rebound that led to the game-winning basket in last Saturday's thrilling 73-72 victory over FIU. That followed a 15-point performance in a 72-55 road victory that snapped North Texas' 17-game home winning streak and gave FAU Head Coach Mike Jarvis his 400th career coaching victory.
For the season, Gantt leads the Owls with a 14.7 points per game scoring average after starting all 25 games this season. He is also averaging four rebounds and has made 47 percent of his field goals.
Gantt's performances have helped FAU lead the Sun Belt Conference with a 10-1 record, while being 18-7 in all games.
Meanwhile, Feil set a new school record with a time of 9:27.77 in the 3,000-meter race in the New Balance Invitational last weekend in New York City. The senior's showing was 19 seconds better than her previous personal best time in the event and was good enough for fourth place in the meet. Her time in the event is currently ranked the 24th best nationally and best among Sun Belt Conference runners.
Other women's nominees for this week's Student-Athlete of the Week Award were basketball player Lyrell Barfield, swimmer Jonna Nyback and tennis player Erika Mrazkova. Swimming standout Csaba Pek was another nominee for the male award.
There's a seasonal transition for FAU athletics as spring sport teams start to heat up during the last month of the basketball and swimming seasons. The men's and women's basketball teams travel to Denver on Wednesday and Thursday evenings for important league games. Both teams will then return home to face Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday, February 12, at the FAU Arena, 777 Glades Road on the Boca Raton campus. The women's game begins at 3 p.m. and will be the annual "Pink Zone" contest, with game proceeds supporting breast cancer awareness. The men's game is set to tip off at 7 p.m.
The softball team begins play with the Owls facing Chattanooga, Georgia Tech and Fordham in a tournament this weekend in Clermont, Fla.
In other spring sports action, the men's tennis team has its home opener on Saturday against North Florida, starting at noon, from Patch Reef Park, 1200 Yamato Road in Boca Raton. Then, the team will make up last week's rainout when it battles USF in Tampa on Sunday, February 13.
The women's tennis also has its home opener on Saturday against Florida Gulf Coast, starting at 2 p.m., at Patch Reed Park.
