Women's Cross-Country Wins Hatter Invitational

DeLand, FL - Paced by six top-ten finishes, Florida Atlantic University's women's cross-country team took first place out of 14 teams at the Stetson Hatter Invitational. The men's team took fifth out of 11 teams as Nick Jarriel finished fifth individually. Atlantic Sun Runner-of-the-Week Raynell Hagberg won her second career meet while Trisha Doyle, Monika Grabowiecka, Linn Modin, Allison Wilcox and Brittany Powers finished in the top-10.

"This was a very big win and was a very big confidence booster for us," head coach Alex Smolka said. "The men had a season best finish and it was great for Nick [Jarriel] to finish in the top-five. This meet just further prepares us for the conference tournament."

The women had 11 runners finish in the top-40 out of 122 athletes. Hagberg finished the 5k race in 18:48. Doyle took second place, finishing in 18:53 while Grabowiecka finished fourth at 19:13. Modin (19:33), Wilcox (19:38) and Powers (19:42) finished sixth, eighth and ninth while Jennifer Schwan (20:09), Artemis Saradakis (20:13), Lauren Moxey (20:29), Ashley Wilcox (20:29) and Antoinette Foster (21:01) finished 15th, 16th, 26th, 34th and 38th, respectively. Saradakis, Barbara Fronrath (21:56) and Laura Hayden (22:19) all registered personal best times.

 

 

Jarriel led the men with an 8k time of 27:14 while Earl Barlow finished 11th individually with a time of 27:40 and Stephen Little finished 27th with a time of 28:42.

The women finished with a team score of 21 points, less than three times the total of second place Jacksonville (71). Fellow Atlantic Sun competitor's UCF (139) and host Stetson (182) finished fifth and seventh. The men finished with 150 points, 107 points behind champions Warner Southern College but ahead of host Stetson (183) and Jacksonville (241).

Florida Atlantic next competes Saturday, October 31 at the Atlantic Sun Championships in Nashville, TN.
