Cheer Breaks Top-10 Nationally

Jan. 21, 2011

BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's cheer teams competed at the United Cheer Association (UCA) College Cheerleading Nationals last weekend. The small co-ed team advanced to finals and finished No. 9.

FAU was the only Sun Belt Conference team to advance to the finals at the event hosted by ESPN Wide World of Sports. The weekend event is the largest college cheerleading competition in the world.

Teams from all over the country submitted videos demonstrating tumbling and stunting skills. With a review of the video that took over three months to prepare and a perfect score of 15, FAU was selected as one of the 16 teams to compete.

The team is comprised of nearly 40 members, a long way from the 16 which began with Head Coach Heather Henderson who assumed the helm of the program in 2003. The team consists of a co-ed and an all girls team which compete at the Division I level.
