Five FAU Athletic Teams Recognized Nationally for Academics

June 10, 2013

BOCA RATON, FL - The NCAA recognized five Florida Atlantic University athletic teams for an APR among the nation's top-10 percent in their respective sports.

Men's golf, women's cross country and women's tennis repeated with a perfect score of 1,000. Women's golf also was recognized at the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Golf tournament for their league-leading GPA and women's swimming, which sent Eszter Bucz to the NCAA National swim meet, were new to the list in 2013.

"We are tremendously proud of our student-athletes in men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, women's swimming and women's tennis for earning this high honor from the NCAA for their outstanding academic achievements," said Eric Shaw, FAU's NCAA faculty athletics representative and FAU professor of marketing.

Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing the latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
