WHYTE, JR., CARDONA NAMED PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University named Kerrith Whyte, Jr. (football) and Alex Cardona (volleyball) student-athletes of the week, for the week of Nov. 13.

Whyte, who was named C-USA Special Teams Player of the Week, became the first Owl to return a kickoff for a touchdown in FAU’s 17 years of football. The sophomore returned the opening kickoff of the second half 98 yards to put the Owls up 27-9 as they defeated Louisiana Tech 48-23 on Saturday. Whyte averaged 64 yards per kick return, which is also a single-game record, and added nine rushing yards.

Cardona continued to bolster the Owls’ back row defense with a pair of solid efforts over the weekend. On Thursday, she had 26 digs and three assists vs. UAB. Cardona added 12 more digs and a service ace against Charlotte on Saturday. The two matches were the 22nd and 23rd double-digit dig matches of the season for the junior. For the weekend, she averaged 6.33 digs per set. 

Football hosts its final regular season game, the Shula Bowl, against FIU on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcasted live on STADIUM and ESPN West Palm 106.3. Volleyball will head to Bowling Green, Kentucky for the Conference USA Tournament. The Owls open as the No. 5 seed and will take on UTSA Friday, Nov. 17 at 8 p.m.
