BOCA RATON, Fla. -
“Our student-athletes continue to achieve and perform at remarkable levels at Florida Atlantic University, said Pat Chun, FAU’s vice president and director of athletics. “The rise in graduation rates, grade point average, and academic performance rate is indicative of the environment of excellence created and stewarded by our student-athletes, coaches and staff.”
The Owls’ 81 percent graduation rate is up 3.6 percent from 2016 and those numbers have continued to trend upward, amassing a 20 percent difference since 2011. The Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) is also up to 60 percent, a 7.2 percent improvement from 2016. The report details that FAU student-athletes are graduating at a 10 percent higher mark than the general student body at Florida Atlantic.
The 2017-18 FAU athletics department theme is #AtlanticRising and student-athletes continue find ways to apply the consistent improvement. It began in 2013 with community service hours that are now at an all-time high. The academic performance followed with student-athletes averaging above a 3.0 GPA for four consecutive semesters.
In 2011, FAU’s student body federal graduation rate was nearly 10 points below Conference USA members. That gap has narrowed in the last six years to less than two percent.
Among teams who exceled in their respective GSR were FAU’s women’s swimming and diving team, women’s tennis and volleyball, who each posted a perfect 100%. On the men’s side, the baseball team recorded a 96 percent graduation rate.
"We are all pleased with the commitment to academic excellence our student-athletes have exhibited over the last few years,” said Eric Coleman, FAU’s Associate Athletic Director and the Director of the Student-Athlete Center for Academics. “The last few years have led to a steady increase in the FAU GSR. Many people have contributed to building FAU’s culture of academic excellence. The student-athletes deserve the credit for their hard work, but it couldn’t happen without the support from their coaches and administration. The foundation of excellence has been set and we will continue to build upon that foundation and will strive toward even greater heights in the future.”
