Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University Athletic Department has announced that FAU Stadium, located at 777 Glades Road, on the Boca Raton campus, will be the final destination for the United States Women's Soccer National Team's Fan Tribute Tour, presented by Panasonic. The U.S. team will face China on Saturday, December 15, with a kickoff time to be determined.
"We want the FAU Stadium to become a showpiece for the University and community, while giving value back to our sponsors," said Mitch Silverman, assistant athletic director for facilities management, operations and events at FAU. "The stadium was designed to be a perfect venue for events like this. I see us hosting other similar events in the future."
FAU Stadium opened in October 2011 and has a seating capacity of 29,419. FAU Athletics has partnered with the Palm Beach Sports Commission to bring large-scale community events to Palm Beach County.
Members of the U.S. women's soccer team are already familiar with playing in Boca Raton. The FAU Soccer Stadium hosted home matches for the magicJack of the Women's Professional Soccer League during the summer of 2011. U.S. National Team stars Abby Wambach and Hope Solo helped the U.S. national team win the gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics with a 6-0-0 record - the first time this has happened for the team in an Olympic tournament. The U.S. won its third straight gold medal (and fourth gold medal overall) at the 2012 London Olympics.
The U.S. has played China once in 2012, scoring a 4-1 victory on Sunday, May 27 in front of a sell-out crowd at PPL Park in Chester, Pennsylvania. Alex Morgan scored twice, Wambach scored once and China knocked in an own goal. The rematch in Florida will be the 49th all-time meeting between the U.S. and China.
