BOCA RATON, Fla. -
Dear Owl Fans,
We are deep into the 2016-17 fall season and we are already off to a successful start.
Congratulations to football’s Dillon DeBoer, named a semifinalist for the 2016 William V. Campbell Trophy. Dillon is the first semifinalist in school history. The Campbell Trophy is equivalent to the Heisman Trophy for academics. The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame will announce finalists in early November.
This past summer offered an opportunity to fortify our administrative team. We’ve added and promoted some talented new teammates!
We welcome Eric Coleman as the associate director of athletics for the student athlete center for academic excellence. As a fan of Florida Atlantic, you know this is an area of great pride. For the first time in the program’s history, FAU student-athletes recorded above a 3.0 GPA in back-to-back semesters, which included the fall of 2015 and the spring of 2016. This has raised the standard of excellence for Owl Athletics and Eric will take a leadership role in raising the bar even higher.
We also have welcomed a new assistant athletics director for business and ticket operations, Phillip Anderson. Phillip joined us in the early fall and has already proven to be a great fit. Corie Betz has taken on the responsibilities of heading up the marketing team and will provide a seamless flow for our student and community outreach efforts as well as the in-game event programming. You may have seen Corie around the past few years. She is an up and coming talent!
Potentially, the biggest physical change for our department this fall is the addition of an on-campus tennis facility. We will bring the men’s and women’s programs back to campus for the first time in more than a decade. Construction has begun on the six-court facility that will be located behind the FAU Arena and adjacent to the softball, beach volleyball and track facilities.
This facility was made possible through the generosity of Richard Stands of the Seagate Hotel and Spa, Peter Schottland, Dr. Charles Hennekens, Dr. Michael Dennis, Howard Guggenheim, Robert Utne, Jackson Smart and Karen Corcoran Walsh. We will host a ribbon cutting ceremony in a few weeks to welcome FAU tennis back to the Boca Raton Campus and invite everyone to attend the ceremony or an upcoming match. We thank our friends for their generosity and support.
Volleyball, soccer and cross country teams as well as football are well into their 2016-17 campaigns. Men’s and women’s golf and tennis have begun and basketball is right around the corner. I encourage you to purchase your season tickets today by calling 1-866-FAU-Owls. #OWLin
