BOCA RATON, Fla. – D’Joun Smith of football and Claire Emslie of women’s soccer have earned Florida Atlantic University's student-athlete of the week honors for their performances over the weekend that led to wins by both teams.
D’Joun Smith provided a great defensive effort in Florida Atlantic’s first victory over USF, a team from an automatic qualifying conference. It was the team’s first such victory since defeating Minnesota in 2007. Smith tallied four tackles, all solo, including one was for a loss of four yards. He forced a quarterback fumble that led to FAU’s first score of the second half. The junior also recorded a pass break up in the first half and an interception on the FAU 25 which he returned for a score. Smith’s 75-yard interception return was the third longest in the program’s history.
The Owls will host their first home game of the season on Saturday, Sept. 21 at noon against Conference USA opponent Middle Tennessee State.
Claire Emslie, FAU’s Player to Watch in Conference USA, scored three goals in a span of 14:27 on Sunday against the University of Arkansas- Pine Bluff. Her goals were the first of the game and put FAU on pace to win the contest 10-0. The sophomore also notched an assist, earning seven points in the match. She and the Owls tied an FAU record for most shots taken in a match with 40.
The women’s soccer team will travel to Los Angeles, California for a match against USC on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. before returning home to host Memphis on Sunday, Sept. 22 at noon.
