FAU Athletics Launches MVP Internship Program
May 7, 2015 BOCA RATON, Fla. -

The Florida Atlantic University Athletics Department has created the Most Valuable Professional (MVP) Internship Program which will enable FAU to continue to strive toward the goal of effectively preparing student-athletes for their future careers.

The MVP Program was developed to teach student-athletes how their unique experiences as a NCAA intercollegiate athlete are beneficial and the skills learned are transferable to their future careers. The three main goals of the initiative are to educate student-athletes about the process of building a career, better prepare them for career opportunities, and assist in securing meaningful work experiences through both internships and full-time positions by partnering with local businesses.

"We are extremely excited for the launch of the Most Valuable Professional (MVP) Internship Program," said Pat Chun, Vice President and Director of Athletics. "We believe it is our priority to provide a platform for student-athletes to be prepared for life after college athletics. We also take this a step further by providing networking events, life skills workshops, career fairs, etc., all to ensure our student-athletes have the opportunities to prepare for their future."

Several local companies have already committed to be a part of FAU Athletics' MVP program, including Boca Raton-local business The Beacon Group. The Beacon Group offers a full array of insurance products in all areas including Personal, Commercial, Life, and Health markets and represents some of the top insurance companies in the country. Beacon Group President Bob Rollins has frequently employed former student-athletes and recognizes the special set of skills these individuals bring to the table.

"We have previously hired student-athletes as interns and from this experience we have learned that a student-athlete is very focused if they are to succeed academically and remain eligible to compete in their varsity activity," said Rollins. "The student-athlete is usually self-motivated, confident and has a strong desire to succeed, which is a necessity in our business environment. We welcome the opportunity to incorporate an intern into our organization with these characteristics with the prospect of full-time employment after graduation."

The MVP program will be supported by the Student-Athlete Center for Academic Excellence (SACAE) as well as FAU's Career Development Center.

"This is an exciting time in FAU Athletics history with the creation of the MVP Internship," said Marlon Dechausay, director of the SACAE. "We believe this program will help strengthen the position of our student-athletes lives after graduation. This program could not have come to life without the great partnership with the Career Development Center, and we look forward to growing that relationship in the years to come."
