BOCA RATON, FL - The FAU women’s softball team had an impressive week after struggling the week before against South Alabama and Troy. The Owls put together a four game winning streak starting by beating Florida International 3-2 on Wednesday and then sweeping ranked Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday and Sunday. The success over the past week started from the pitching mound with this week’s Athlete of the Week Rose Gressley.
The Virginia Beach, VA native went 3-0 and put together one of the most notable weeks of her career in the circle. Against FIU she threw a complete game allowing just six hits and striking out six in their first win of the week. In the first game against no. 17 Louisiana- Lafayette on Saturday Gressley threw a 10-inning complete game one-hitter against the best hitting team in the conference. At one point during the game, she retired 18 straight UL batters. Her performance helped the Owls to the first win in school history over the Ragin Cajuns.
On Sunday, after allowing back-to-back hits to start the game she held UL without a hit for the rest of the day. The only two batters to reach base for UL after that came on a fielding error and a walk. For the week, Gressley threw 24 innings, allowed four earned runs and struck out 16 batters.
The softball team will next take on Florida Atlantic University May 5-6 before heading to the Sun Belt Tournament in Lafayette, LA May 11-14.
