Athletics Debuts Extra Point Program

March 28, 2014

Florida Atlantic University’s Athletic Department will debut its Extra Point Program prior to the 2014 REDBLUE Spring Football Game and a series of related events on Saturday, April 5 at FAU Stadium.

The Extra Point Club is comprised of local businesses and restaurants that jointly support FAU Athletics. Patrons of those businesses will be afforded the opportunity to donate money toward FAU student-athlete scholarships.

“We are committed to ‘Building Champions Brick-by-Brick’,” said Pat Chun, FAU’s director of athletics. “The Extra Point Program is an example of including the community in our building efforts. FAU student-athletes have tallied a record number of community service hours in 2013-14 and it is exciting to see the two groups embrace each other.”

Nine businesses will begin asking for donations as of Monday, March 31.

“Being the local neighborhood café, we are supporters of FAU and its athletics program,” said Ken Cordes, Corner Bakery Café general manager. “We try to bring awareness of FAU into the community every day, and the Extra Point Program is a great way to jumpstart this venture.”

Corner Bakery Café is joined by C.R Chicks; It’s Owl Time; Fran’s Chicken Haven; HotDogOpolis; Tom Sawyer Restaurant & Pastry; 620 Subs; Tomasso’s Pizza & Subs Italian Restaurant; and V&S Italian Deli & Subs.

“The FAU athletic program is really taking off, not only through the dedication of their student-athletes, but their presence in the community, said Brian Fenney, owner and operator of C.R. Chicks. “Because of this, C.R. Chicks is more than willing to help out with the initial launch of the Extra Point Program.”

The Owls will celebrate with events on April 5 surrounding the 2014 REDBLUE Spring Game. The day’s events are free and open to the public, beginning at 10:30 a.m. with a kids’ zone featuring inflatables, food trucks and live music by South Florida’s own, The Flyers.

Stadium gates will open at noon for the 1 p.m. Spring Game kick. The spring game will mark the final time fans will be able to see the Owls in action prior to the official start of the 2014 football season.

Members of the FAU ticket sales staff will be on-hand to assist with a special select-a-seat event for fans to renew their season tickets or purchase first-time season tickets for the 2014 season. Fans that have renewed their season tickets will be able to pick up their renewal gift inside of Gate 1.

Football season tickets also can be purchased by calling 1-866-FAU-Owls. FAU will open the 2014 season on Saturday, Aug. 30 at the University of Nebraska. FAU’s home opener is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 13 versus Tulsa.
