BOCA RATON, Fla. -
With multiple teams going undefeated last week, Florida Atlantic University Player of the Week selection was very competitive. However, three student-athletes’ performances stood out among the rest. This week’s honors go to women’s tennis player Ana Gutierrez and beach volleyball’s Jessalyn Kinlaw and Megan Rice.
Gutierrez led FAU to a 5-0 week, going 5-0 in singles play and 2-2 in doubles action, paired up with Laura Fabrizi. The senior won the clinching point against NIU in the extra set and took all other matches in two. Gutierrez is now 9-8 in singles action including 5-1 at the No. 3 spot, and 11-5 with Fabrizi in doubles play.
In beach volleyball action, FAU’s No. 1 tandem of Kinlaw and Rice went 4-0 last week, dropping only two sets. They defeated the top team from New Mexico, rallying from a first set loss to take the match. In their second match on Friday, they swept the pair from Jacksonville State by matching 21-10 sets. On Saturday, they toppled the top duo from Lincoln Memorial with a pair of 20-11 scores. They finished the weekend by rallying from a set one loss to defeat the top tandem from No. 12 ranked Georgia State. Rice and Kinlaw have now won their last 10 matches in a row.
Women’s tennis will play a mid-week matchup versus Towson on Wednesday, March 22, 10 a.m., at the FAU Tennis Complex. Beach volleyball will take part in the Battle on the Bay tournament on Friday, March 24 and Saturday, March 25 in St. Petersburg, Fla. The Owls will face Eckerd College and Jacksonville State on Friday followed by Huntington and Morehead State on Saturday.
