Nelson hit three home runs and drove in 11 runs in the three-game sweep at FIU, the co-preseason Sun Belt Conference favorite. The junior, from Orlando, hit two home runs as part of a career-high six-RBI night in the Owls' 9-5 win on March 17. Trailing 4-1 in the sixth inning, Nelson connected on a two-run home run to bring FAU within one run at 4-3. Then, the next inning he capped a six-run seventh inning with a grand slam to put the Owls ahead by a score of 9-4. On March 18, he hit a three-run home run to increase FAU's lead to 7-2. For the week, he hit .389 (7-for-18) with four runs scored, three home runs and 11 RBI. All four of his hits against FIU drove in a run.
For the second time this season, Ryan has earned player of the week status by winning both of her singles match at the No. 2 position and going a combined 2-1 in leading Florida Atlantic to a pair of victories last week. The Delray Beach native won a hard-fought, three-set match over Albany on March 13. She won the opening set 6-1 and won a third-set tiebreaker by a 10-6 score. Ryan also won a dominating 6-1, 6-4 match over Cleveland State University on March 14. On the season, the junior stands 9-1 in the singles and has won nine consecutive matches. Ryan has won all five of her matches competed at No. 2 singles and posted a 2-0 record at the No. 3 singles position.
This week, men's and women's golf will each compete in two tournaments. The women will complete play in the 2012 MSU Ocala Invitational on Tuesday, March 20, and then have a weekend event in Crystal River, the University of Cincinnati Invitational beginning Friday, March 23. The men have a two-day competition hosted by UCF in Orlando finishing up on Tuesday, March 20, and then will host their annual Spring Break Tournament at the Fountains Country Club in Lake Worth beginning Friday, March 23 through Sunday, March 25.
The track and field squad heads to Orlando beginning Friday, March 23, to participate in the UCF Black & Gold Challenge.
Softball will have four Sun Belt Conference games this week. They travel to Miami to take on FIU on Wednesday, March 21, with the first pitch at 6 p.m. Then they host a three-game set at the FAU Softball Stadium against the University of South Alabama, with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 24 at 6 and 8 p.m., and the finale on Sunday, March 25 (time TBA).
The baseball team welcomes the University of Miami to the FAU Baseball Stadium on Wednesday, March 21 at 6:30 p.m., and then travels to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, to take on Middle Tennessee State University on Friday, March 23 at 7 p.m., Saturday, March 24 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, March 25 at 1 p.m.).
Women's tennis has matches on back-to-back days - Tuesday, March 20 against Towson University at 2 p.m. and Wednesday, March 21 against FIU at 1 p.m. - and then again on Friday, March 23 against University of Denver at 2 p.m. The men's tennis squad will compete on Thursday, March 22 against Oklahoma State University at 2 p.m. All of these matches will take place at Patch Reef Park.
Men's soccer has three spring matches this week. The Fort Lauderdale Strikers come to the FAU Soccer Stadium on Wednesday, March 21 at 8 p.m., and then the team hosts Valcisco, an Argentinian team, on Saturday, March 24 at 10 a.m. They play again later that night, at Nova against Nova Southeastern University beginning at 6 p.m.
