BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University men's and women's basketball players Greg Gantt and Latavia Dempsey have been selected as FAU's student athletes of the week, each playing vital roles in wins against Louisiana-Lafayette.
Greg Gantt, a senior guard from Gainesville, scored 23 points on Thursday's game against the Rajin' Cajuns contributing to a 75-70 win and entered the game No.5 nationally in scoring with an average of 22.3 points per game. The Owls took on Louisiana just two days after a 61-57 win over Hofstra. With Hofstra holding the lead with six minutes remaining, Gantt hit a pair of free throws, leading to the eventual win. Gantt led the game's scorers with 24 points. The back-to-back wins evened the Owls record to 8-8, and improved the team to 3-2 in conference play.
The men's basketball team plays at Middle Tennessee on Thursday, January 10 and Western Kentucky on Saturday, January 12, both at 8 p.m. The WKU game is scheduled for ESPN3. FAU will then return home to play host to Troy on Thursday, January 17 at 7 p.m. at the FAU Arena, 777 Glades Road on the Boca Raton campus.
Junior guard Latavia Dempsey played an instrumental role in Florida Atlantic's three break victories, including two road triumphs in Sun Belt Conference play with career highs in points and three-point field goals. Dempsey established career high scoring performances in consecutive ballgames, highlighted by 19 points in a home win over Louisiana on January 2. The 19 points came after tallying 16 of her 18 points in the second half against ULM on December 29. Dempsey shot 69% (11-of-16) for the three games from behind the arc, including a perfect 5-for-5 shooting night against the Ragin' Cajuns. On the season, Dempsey is averaging 9.8 points a game and shooting 47% from three-point range.
The women's basketball team travels to Middle Tennessee on Wednesday, January 9 at 8 p.m. before battling the Western Kentucky on Saturday, January 12 at 5 p.m. Dempsey and the rest of the women's team will return home on Wednesday, January 16 to host Troy.
